"THE IDIOTS GUIDE TO ROWING"

The Coaches are very jealous of the short time the teams have to train in good Florida weather, so access to the Crimson young men and women athletes will be very limited. Most of the women's and men's team activities will take place at the NEW Manatee County Rowing Training Facility at Ft. Hamer Park, Bradenton at the head of the Manatee River.

 ABOUT HARRY PARKER

Harry Parker, the Thomas Bolles Head Coach for Harvard Men's Crew, is widely regarded as the premier rowing coach in the United States and, since taking over the heavyweight program in 1963, has  brought tremendous success to the Crimson as his crews have dominated both the Eastern Sprints and national championships. He has also guided Harvard to clear advantages over all its collegiate opponents, and has taken Crimson rowing onto the world stage to compete.

Heading into the 50th season of his head-coaching tenure and his 52nd year overall at Harvard, highlights of the Parker era include 21 undefeated regular seasons, 27 EARC Sprints varsity titles, 21 JV Sprints crowns, eight official national championship victories, and eight unofficial national crowns when the Crimson has gone undefeated against all major competition.

Parker owns a 42-7 mark in the Harvard-Yale Regatta. His Crimson has won 11 of the last 12 installments of America's oldest intercollegiate athletic event, including each of the last four.

 ABOUT LIZ O'LEARY

Liz O'Leary, Head Coach of Women’s Crew, is in her 25th season guiding the Radcliffe heavyweight crews to the pinnacle of women's collegiate rowing, and made Radcliffe a perennial contender for national championships.  The recent run of excellence--her 2003 team captured the NCAA title, and her 2005 varsity followed that up with a bronze-medal finish--makes this one of the most successful eras of an already-proud tradition of Black and White crews.

O'Leary has coached highly successful crews who are dedicated to the ultimate goal of performance as a team, while nurturing a program where women can train for individual peak performances.  Twelve of O'Leary's Radcliffe athletes have competed on U.S. World Championship and Olympic teams. Most recently, Michelle Guerette '02 and Caryn Davies '05 rowed in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and the 2008 Games in Beijnn.

ABOUT CHARLEY BUTT

Charley Butt has guided Harvard's men's lightweight program to an impressive list of successes, and his teams have consistently been among the nation's best.

In his tenure, Harvard has captured 12 Eastern crowns and seven national championships, including the 2003 IRA National Championship. His crews have been amazingly consistent, winning dual records in 22 of his 25 seasons at the helm.

As a coach, Butt's experience extends well beyond Harvard, including four stints as a United States Olympic coach, a position he continues to hold. His most recent assignment came in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing where he guided Radcliffe alumna Michelle Guerette '02 to a silver medal in the women's single scull

ABOUT MICHIEL BARTMAN

Olympic champion, three-time Olympic medalist and 15-year coaching veteran Michiel Bartman is in his first season as head coach of the Radcliffe lightweight crew in 2011-12.
Bartman spent six years as the head coach at Vesper Boat Club, preparing elite athletes to compete at the World Rowing Championships and Olympic Games.

He led crews to more than 100 gold medals, including a bronze medal in the women’s lightweight quad at the 2008 World Rowing Championships. His crews have won club and elite national championships, as well as titles and points trophies at Canadian Henley, the Head Of The Charles and other top regattas.

Bartman transitioned to full-time coaching following a rowing career that featured three Olympic medals, three world championships medals, 13 World Cup medals and more than 100 total gold medals. He participated in nine world championships in five different events and won three golds at the Dutch collegiate championships.
