Welcome back! Your Club’s officers and directors have been hard at work on a new season of exciting activities. Come to our monthly luncheons covering timely topics with outstanding speakers. We urge you to participate in the Club’s committees and learn of developments in Cambridge.
The Welcome Back party will be held at College Hall, the former Charles Ringling mansion, on the bay front of the New College campus on Saturday, October 27th from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
This event offers a splendid opportunity to renew friendships, welcome new and prospective members, and learn more about how you can get involved with the Club during the new season. Please return the reservation form that was enclosed with Walt Ulin’s letter of September 12th by Monday, Oct. 22nd if you plan to attend. If you’ve misplaced it, please call Charlie or Rosalie Peirce at 379-3463.
College Hall is a beautiful new venue for us this year. The party is free of charge and your spouse or significant other is also invited. Catered hot and cold hors d’oeuvres will be served, as well as beer, wine, and soft drinks.
Directions to Welcome Back Party, College Hall, New College:

- Go north on US 41 to 1st light. Turn left onto College Drive and into New College Campus.
- Continue through stop sign at Bay Shore Road. Follow College Drive as it curves around to left. At next stop sign, turn right. On bay front ahead is College Hall.

The funds that Club Members so generously donated to our Professional Development Fund last year allowed the Club to provide $2,400 to support three Sarasota administrators going to Cambridge this summer where they took seminars at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. During the past six years, Harvard seminars have powerfully impacted participants who have brought their Harvard experience back to enrich Sarasota schools. This tie between Sarasota schools and Harvard depends on your generous contributions.
Jennifer Nzeza, the 2007-2008 Teacher of the Year, was unable to attend a seminar this summer, but is taking a Harvard WIDEWorld online course, “Differentiating Instruction”, which is quite relevant to her teaching responsibilities at Booker Middle School. In 2005-2006, Jennifer completed two WIDEWorld courses through a program the Club sponsored.
Here are comments from other participants about their summer experiences:
From Chris Cale, Assistant Principal, Sarasota High School: “My heartfelt thanks to the Sarasota Harvard Club! Your contributions to the Sarasota County School Board Educational Foundation assured that I was able to attend the ‘Leadership: An Evolving Vision’ conference at the HGSE…I have already begun the steps of implementing some key processes at my school site focused on the research of Millie Pierce, John Collins, and Roland Barth in the areas of writing and small learning communities.”
From Betsey Asheim-Dean, Principal, Bay Haven Elementary School: “My Harvard experience at the Art of Leadership on July 2-10 will never be forgotten…Meeting and working with 150 other administrators from around the world taught me the commonalities of current issues at all schools. The institute addressed the urgency of educating our youth in a global society, and provided best practices from the best researchers and practitioners in the country. I plan to implement many practices I brought back from the institute. Thanks again for making this unique experience a reality for me.”
From Kyle Lundquist, Assistant Principal, Lakeview Elementary: “The week long Data Wise Institute that I was privileged to attend at Harvard’s Principals’ Center was both inspiring and motivating. Richard Murnane’s, Steve Seidel’s, and Richard Elmore’s insights and provocative studies on the future of education set me on the path of developing a more comprehensive “distributed leadership” program at Lakeview Elementary. I am most grateful for my experience and I can’t wait to share with my staff the “Step by Step Blueprint for Using Assessment Results to Improve Teaching and Learning.”
The 15th Annual Telecast of the Harvard-Yale game will take place at the Sarasota Ale House, on Saturday, November 17th, starting at 12:00 pm. The Sarasota Ale House is located at 3800 Kenny Drive, on the northeast corner of Bee Ridge and Cattlemen Road. From I-75, take Exit 207, head west, take a right on Cattlemen Road, and you will see a sign for the Sarasota Ale House on your right. The Game will not be televised on WGN this year, which offers the perfect excuse to check out the brand new HD screens at the Sarasota Ale House while cheering for Harvard. If you have any questions, please call Bert Kneeland at 228-2378. |
